From Ennis town center, head south on O'Connell Street, then turn right onto the Limerick Road. Continue for approximately 20 minutes until you see Clare Abbey on your left. The walk is about 4.2 km and should take around 50 minutes.
Public Transport

From Ennis Bus Station, take bus route 330, 337 or 51 towards Clareabbey. Alight at the Heather Hill stop, which is a 6-minute walk (437 meters) from the abbey. A single fare typically costs between €3 and €5. Alternatively, take the train to Ennis station and then take one of the bus routes mentioned above.

Clare Abbey, also known as Clareabbey, is a tranquil ruined Augustinian monastery located near Ennis, County Clare. Situated along the banks of the River Fergus, about a mile north of Clarecastle, the abbey provides a captivating glimpse into Ireland's medieval past. Founded in 1189 by Domnall Mór Ua Briain, the King of Thomond, it was initially known as the 'Abbey of St. Peter and St. Paul at Kilmony'. Clare Abbey was the first, largest, and most significant Augustinian house in County Clare. Despite its location on rocky grassland, its strategic position within O'Brien's territory and its extensive land holdings ensured its prominence. The abbey's architecture, while simple, holds considerable interest. The church, dating back to the 12th century, originally consisted of a long, oblong building. Later, a belfry tower was added, dividing the interior into a nave and chancel. The domestic buildings, constructed primarily in the 15th century, include notable windows with elegant tracery. Wine and storage containers were imported from southwest France and Bristol from the 12th century onward, indicating that the monks enjoyed a rich diet of fish, beef, pork, and mutton. Despite experiencing a turbulent history, the abbey remained in use until the 17th century. In 1278, it was the site of a great slaughter during infighting among the O'Brien family. Following the dissolution of the monasteries in 1543, the abbey and its lands were granted to the Barons of Ibrackan. Today, visitors can explore the extensive remains, including the church, belfry, and domestic buildings, and appreciate the abbey's historical and architectural significance.
