Discover more about Fort Mitchel

Fort Mitchel, crowning Spike Island in Cork Harbour, is a historical site with layers of stories spanning over 1300 years. The island's story encompasses a 7th-century monastery, a formidable fortress, and what became the largest convict depot in the world during Victorian times. The first fort on Spike Island was built in 1779 by the British Army. However, work began on the current star-shaped Fort Mitchel in 1804 and was completed around 1850. The fort was designed to garrison up to 3,000 men and was at the cutting edge of military technology. Its star shape allowed defenders to cover all parts of the island with fire, and its low profile made it difficult to target. During the Great Famine, the fort became a prison in 1847, eventually holding over 2,300 inmates, becoming the largest prison in Britain and Ireland. Conditions were harsh, and over 1,300 prisoners died and were buried in mass graves on the island. The prison operated until 1883 and then was used by the British and Irish military. It briefly became a prison again in 1985 before finally closing in 2004. Today, visitors can explore Fort Mitchel through guided tours and self-guided explorations. Highlights include the dark cells of the punishment block, exhibits on the island's social, military, and penal history, and scenic walking trails offering views of Cork Harbour.
