From Macroom, take a taxi to Carrigadrohid Castle, which is about 8 km east of the town. The taxi ride should take around 10 minutes and cost approximately €15-€20.

    If driving from Cork City, take the N22 road towards Macroom. Continue on the N22 for about 20 kilometers until you reach Ballincollig. From Ballincollig, take the R585 road towards Carrigadrohid and follow it for approximately 15 kilometers. In Carrigadrohid, turn left onto Gort Road, then follow it to Lee's Road, where you will find the castle. Limited parking is available along the road or in nearby areas.

    Carrigadrohid Castle, located in County Cork, is a captivating medieval tower house built in the 15th century by the MacCarthys of Muskerry. The castle's most distinctive feature is its location: it stands on a rock in the middle of the River Lee, adjacent to the bridge that gives the village its name. This unique positioning made it a strategic point for controlling movement and transportation along the river.The castle's history is rich and eventful. In 1650, it was besieged by Parliamentary forces following the Battle of Macroom. During this siege, Boetius MacEgan, the Bishop of Ross, was captured and tragically hanged outside the castle after he refused to urge the Irish garrison to surrender. The MacCarthys were dispossessed, and the castle eventually came into the hands of the Bowen family.Over the centuries, the castle has undergone several extensions and modifications. Although it has been in ruins since the late 18th century, a local conservation group is committed to its preservation. Visitors can explore the castle grounds, enjoy the scenic views, and appreciate the historical significance of this unique structure. The castle's picturesque setting makes it an ideal spot for picnics and leisurely walks along the riverbank.
