Walking
If you're staying in nearby Carrick, a scenic walk to Trá Athphort is a great option. Head towards the coast on the R263 road. The walk is approximately 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) and should take around an hour. Be mindful of traffic along the road and wear comfortable shoes.
Public Transport
To reach Trá Athphort via public transport, take Bus Eireann route 64 from Donegal Town to Carrick. Once in Carrick, you'll need to arrange a taxi or local transport to cover the remaining 5 kilometers to Trá Athphort, as public transport options are limited in that final stretch. A short taxi ride from Carrick to the beach will cost approximately €10-€15. It is advisable to book a taxi in advance.
Driving
If driving from Donegal Town, take the N15 road northbound until the junction with the N56. Merge onto the N56 towards Letterkenny and continue, passing through Kilcar and Carrick. After Carrick, turn onto the R263 towards the coast, then take the unnamed road that leads directly to Trá Athphort. Parking is free and available on the grass at the side of the road, but spaces are limited.
