Getting there

Driving

From Killybegs, head west on the R263 towards Kilcar for approximately 8 km. Turn right onto the road signposted for Muckross Head. Follow this narrow road for about 2 km to reach the Muckross Head car park. From the car park, Trá Bán Beach is a short walk down a hill. Note that the road to the beach has a height restriction, so larger vehicles and campers should park in the main car park. Parking is free.

Public Transport

Take the Bus Éireann Route 64 from Sligo to Donegal Town. From Donegal Town, connect to a local bus service to Kilcar. From Kilcar, it's best to take a taxi or local shuttle to Muckross Head, as the walk is approximately 5km. Bus fares vary depending on the route, check the Bus Éireann website for current pricing. A short taxi ride from Kilcar to Muckross Head will cost approximately €10-€15.

Walking

If you are already at Muckross Head viewpoint, follow the coastal path towards the east. The path leads down to Trá Bán Beach, offering scenic views along the way. The walk from the viewpoint to the beach is approximately 15-20 minutes. Ensure you wear appropriate footwear as the path can be uneven in places.

Overview

Trá Bán Beach, meaning "White Beach" in Irish, is a hidden gem on the Muckross Head peninsula in County Donegal. This small, east-facing beach offers a serene escape with its pristine white sands and clear, inviting waters. Sheltered from the stronger currents, Trá Bán is known as a safe spot for swimming, making it a popular destination for families.The beach is surrounded by the dramatic landscape of Muckross Head, with stunning views of the cliffs and the wider coastline. Muckross Head itself is a noteworthy destination, offering panoramic views, clifftop walks, and unique geological formations. The area is also popular for rock climbing, thanks to its unusual horizontal rock strata.Historically, the headland features the remains of a Neolithic wall known locally as The Market House. While little remains of the structure, it hints at the area's ancient past as a possible defensive site or trading location. The nearby Muckross Bay, also known as Trá na nglór (Beach of the Noise), offers a different experience, popular with surfers due to its larger swells. However, Trá na nglór is known to have rip tides and is not as safe for swimming.
