Overview
Bullock Harbour, or Bulloch Harbour, is a small, active harbor located near Dalkey on Dublin Bay's southeastern coast. Its origins trace back to the 14th century when the monks of St. Mary's Abbey constructed it. The monks used it to transport fish and receive cargo, fortifying it with a wall to keep intruders out. In those times, every vessel using the port paid a toll of one fish.Over the centuries, Bullock Harbour has played various roles, including serving as a base for pilot boats guiding ships into Dublin Port. The Pilot's Cottages, built around 1807, housed the pilots who navigated boats through treacherous waters. The harbor also facilitated the transport of coal in the 19th century.Today, Bullock Harbour is a picturesque and peaceful spot. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views, observe local fishermen, and engage in marine leisure activities such as kayaking and sea scouting. The harbor is also a starting point for trips to Dalkey Island. Nearby, Bulloch Castle overlooks the harbor, adding to the area's historical charm. The harbor's blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage makes it a memorable destination.
