From Galway city, take Bus Éireann route 417 towards Tuam. The bus departs from Eyre Square and arrives in Claregalway. From the Claregalway bus stop, it is approximately a 15-minute walk to the castle along the R339 road. Bus tickets from Galway to Claregalway typically cost between €2 and €15. Alternatively, Expressway (Bus Éireann) operates a bus from Claregalway Cois Chláir to Galway, Bus Station hourly. Tickets cost €10–14.

From Galway City, take the N84 road north towards Claregalway. Continue on the N84 until you reach the roundabout at Claregalway. Take the first exit onto the R339. The castle will be on your left after about 1 kilometer. Limited parking is available near the castle. Parking is also available at The Claregalway Hotel. Driving from Galway to Claregalway takes approximately 11 minutes.

Claregalway Castle, an imposing 15th-century Norman tower house, stands as a testament to Ireland's rich and often turbulent past. Constructed in the 1440s by the De Burgo (Burke) family, who held significant power in Connacht, the castle strategically controlled both water and land trade routes along the River Clare.Throughout its history, Claregalway Castle has been a focal point in numerous conflicts. It was the site of sieges and battles involving rival clans, English invaders, and Irish rebels. A notable event was the Battle of Knockdoe in 1504, one of the largest and bloodiest medieval Irish battles. In 1571, John Burke, seized the castle, defending it against clan artillery. Cromwell's forces captured the castle in 1651, using it as their headquarters.In later centuries, the castle transitioned from a military stronghold to a residence and, eventually, fell into disrepair. However, in 2000, Dr. Eamonn O'Donoghue purchased the castle and began an extensive restoration project, employing traditional methods and master craftsmen. Today, Claregalway Castle is open to the public, offering guided tours and hosting various cultural events. Visitors can explore the castle's architecture, learn about its history, and even stay overnight in rooms available through Airbnb. The nearby Franciscan Friary and the Nine Arches Bridge add to the historical ambiance of the area.
