Derrymacloughna Castle, situated near Turloughmore, County Galway, is a captivating ruin that whispers tales of Ireland's past. This five-story tower house, constructed in the 16th century, served as a stronghold for the De Burgo (Burke) family, one of the most influential clans in Ireland. The name Derrymaclaughna translates to “the oak wood of MacLoughna,” hinting at the area's once-dense oak forests.The De Burgo family, descendants of the Norman knight William de Burgh, who arrived in Ireland in 1171, became prominent landowners in Connacht and Munster. They adopted Irish customs and became known as the “Irish Burkes”. Historical records indicate that John De Burgo (Burke) held the castle in 1574. The castle remained in the Burke family for centuries; in the early 19th century, it became the residence of Thomas P. O'Flahertie, whose family was related to Oscar Wilde.Today, Derrymacloughna Castle stands in ruins, though some original features remain. The castle had five stories, including a vaulted basement and four floors above. The entrance was on the ground floor, protected by a machicolation, and the upper floors had ogival-headed windows. Although the castle is not open to the public and is private property, it can be viewed from the road.
