    If driving from Galway City, take the N83 road towards Tuam. After approximately 14 km, take the first exit onto the R348 road toward Belclare. Continue for about 5 km, and you will see signs for Knockma Forest Trail. Turn left onto the road leading to the forest entrance. There is parking available at the trailhead. Parking is free.

    From Galway City, take Bus Eireann Route 409 towards Tuam. Get off at the stop in Belclare. From there, it is approximately a 2 km walk to the Knockma Forest Trail entrance. Head east on the R348 road, following the signs for Knockma Forest Trail. The path to the entrance will be on your left. A single fare on Bus Eireann within the city is approximately €2.20-€3.00. Be sure to check the bus schedule for return trips.

    If you are already in Belclare, you can walk to Knockma Forest Trail. From the center of Belclare, head southeast on the R348 road for about 2 km until you reach the entrance of Knockma Forest Trail on your left. The walk is scenic.

Knockma Forest Trail, situated near Belclare in County Galway, offers a serene escape into a world where nature and Irish mythology blend seamlessly. The trail, maintained by Coillte, is a looped walk of 4.2 kilometers, suitable for most fitness levels. It is an easy to moderate walk. The trail winds through a diverse woodland setting, featuring hazel, oak, and ash trees. Keep an eye out for the charming fairy doors nestled at the base of some trees, adding a touch of magic to your walk. The forest floor is adorned with wildflowers, enhancing the natural beauty of the area. As you ascend Knockma Hill, you'll encounter two large cairns, ancient burial sites steeped in legend. Tradition holds that Queen Maeve of Connacht and Ceasair, an early colonist of Ireland, are buried here. The hill is also said to be the court of Finvarra, the King of the Connacht fairies, adding to the area's mystical allure. From the summit, enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. On a clear day, the vistas are breathtaking, offering a perfect spot for a picnic or simply soaking in the tranquility. The trail consists of four sections: the Forest Loop, the Avenue Loop, Finvarra's Trail, and the Queen Maeve Trail. The Forest Loop is the longest section and leads to the summit. The Avenue Loop offers views of the countryside and Finvarra Castle. Finvarra's Trail features limestone pavements resembling the Burren and a memorial to Colonel Patrick Kelly. The Queen Maeve Trail is a short detour to the supposed burial site of Queen Maeve. Knockma Forest Park is open year-round with no entry fee. There is parking available at the trailhead.
