Discover more about Menlo Castle

Nestled on the banks of the River Corrib, Menlo Castle offers a glimpse into Ireland's past. Built in the 16th century on the site of an earlier tower house, it became the primary residence of the Blake family in 1600. The Blakes, one of the fourteen Tribes of Galway, transformed the castle into a symbol of their power, adding a Jacobean mansion in the late 17th century. They were known for their hospitality, hosting the annual 'Maying in Menlo' festival with sports, music, and dancing for the villagers. Tragedy struck in 1910 when a fire broke out during the absence of Lord Valentine and Lady Blake, claiming the life of their disabled daughter, Eleanor. The castle was largely destroyed, and the family never returned. The ruins, now covered in ivy, evoke a sense of mystery and offer a poignant reminder of the past. While direct access to the castle may be restricted due to ongoing conservation efforts, visitors can still appreciate the ruins from the surrounding area. The picturesque setting on the River Corrib makes it an ideal spot for a scenic walk or a picnic.
