From Loughrea town center, The Walks are easily accessible on foot. Head southeast on Main Street, then turn left onto Church Street. Follow the path until you reach the entrance to The Walks. The walk from the town center is short and straightforward.

Public Transport

If arriving by bus from Galway, exit at the Loughrea bus stop and walk towards the town center. Head southeast on Main Street, then turn left onto Church Street, following the path to The Walks. Bus Éireann and Citylink operate routes from Galway to Loughrea. A single bus fare from Galway to Loughrea ranges from €6 to €13.

Driving

If driving, navigate to Loughrea town center. From Galway City, take the N6 towards Loughrea. Once in Loughrea, follow signs to the town center. Parking is available near the square, though fees may apply. Galway County Council sometimes offers free parking concessions, especially around Christmas. Station Rd Parking is another option. From the parking area, The Walks are a short walk away; head southeast on Main Street and turn left onto Church Street.

This unique attraction features a T-shaped, pedestrianized walkway shaded by trees, making it ideal for a relaxing stroll. What sets The Walks apart is the still-functioning medieval moat that runs alongside it, the only one of its kind in Ireland.The walkway dates back to 1791, influenced by landlord Clanricarde, who sought to create a natural setting for leisure. The river flowing through The Walks is crucial for the Loughrea Lake Fishery, serving as a spawning ground for brown trout. Over time, the masonry elements fell into disrepair, prompting a conservation project that began in 2019 to restore the bridges and walls.Today, visitors can enjoy the vibrant flora and fauna, including wild brown trout, mallard ducks, and herons. A recent addition is a sculpture carved from a dead sycamore tree, depicting these local wildlife. The Walks offer a blend of natural beauty and historical significance, providing a peaceful retreat for individuals, couples, and families.
