Discover more about Rahinnane Castle

Rahinnane Castle, also known as Caisleán Ráthanáin in Irish, is a captivating historical site located a little over a mile northwest of Ventry on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry. The castle's origins trace back to a 7th or 8th-century ringfort, originally named Rath Fhionnáin, meaning 'Finan's ringfort'. This ancient earthwork features a 30-foot deep ditch, with an entrance in the southwest and a souterrain in the southeast. In the 15th or 16th century, the FitzGeralds, hereditary Knights of Kerry, constructed a rectangular, three-story tower house within the ringfort. Local tradition suggests that this strategic location was the last stronghold in Ireland held by the Vikings due to its defensible position. In 1602, during the Nine Years' War, Sir Charles Wilmot seized the castle. It was later ruined during the Cromwellian conquest between 1649 and 1653. Today, visitors can explore the remains of the castle, including substantial portions of the outer walls, a mural stairway, traces of vaulting, and a blind arcade. Two corner turrets are also visible. The castle's setting within the ancient ringfort provides a unique juxtaposition of historical periods, offering panoramic views of Ventry Harbour. Please note that the castle is located on private property, and it may be necessary to obtain permission from the owners to visit.
