Discover more about Source of the Blackwater

The Source of the Blackwater offers a tranquil escape into the rugged landscape of Sliabh Luachra, near the border of Cork and Kerry. Here, in the Mullaghareirk Mountains, the mighty Blackwater River begins its journey. The area is steeped in history, with connections to Gearoid Iarla, the Earl of Desmond, who sought refuge here in 1588 after the Desmond Rebellion. Local folklore also remembers Fr. Maurice McKenraghry, a chaplain to the Earl, who was captured and martyred in Meenganine. The source itself is a modest spring, easily missed if not for the waymarked trails. Two looped walks, marked in green and blue, start near the source, with the blue loop passing directly by it. The surrounding landscape offers panoramic views of the counties of Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Tipperary. The Blackwater River is also a spawning ground for Atlantic Salmon.
