Overview
The Curragh Racecourse, whose name comes from the Irish word 'Cuirreach' meaning 'place of the running horse,' is more than just a racecourse; it's a historic landmark deeply intertwined with Ireland's passion for horse racing. Located on the vast, open Curragh Plains in County Kildare, the site has been associated with equestrian activities since at least the third century when chariot racing took place here. The first official race meeting was recorded in 1727, and in 1868, the Curragh was officially recognized as a horse racing and training facility by an act of Parliament. Today, the Curragh hosts 23 race days annually, including all five Irish Classic races: the Irish 1,000 Guineas, the Irish 2,000 Guineas, the Irish Derby, the Irish Oaks, and the Irish St. Leger. These prestigious races attract top horses, trainers, and jockeys from around the world. The Curragh isn't just for race days; it's also a major training center. The Curragh Training Grounds encompass approximately 1,500 acres and include 70 miles of turf gallops, 12 miles of peat gallops, and eight all-weather tracks. Guided tours are available, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the facilities and the daily routines of jockeys, trainers, and racehorse owners. In recent years, the Curragh underwent a significant redevelopment project, completed in 2019, to modernize the grandstand and other facilities. The new grandstand offers panoramic views of the racecourse and surrounding plains. Whether you're a seasoned racing enthusiast or a first-time visitor, the Curragh Racecourse offers an unforgettable experience steeped in Irish sporting history.
