If you are driving from Limerick city, start on the M7 motorway and head towards the N69 exit for Foynes. Continue on N69 until you reach the turn-off for the R522 towards Askeaton. Follow the R522 until you reach the village of Askeaton, then take the R523 towards Ballymurragh East. Barnagh Tunnel is located in Ballymurragh East. There is parking available near the entrance, but make sure to check local signage for any restrictions.
Public Transportation
To reach Barnagh Tunnel via public transport, take a bus from Limerick city to Askeaton. Bus Eireann operates services to Askeaton from Limerick. Once you arrive in Askeaton, you can take a taxi or arrange for a local ride to Ballymurragh East, where Barnagh Tunnel is located. Make sure to check the bus schedule in advance as services may be limited. Expect taxi fares to be around €10-€15 for the short distance from Askeaton to the tunnel.

Walking to Barnagh Tunnel from Limerick city is quite a trek, as it’s approximately 25 kilometers away. A feasible route would be to walk along the scenic paths by the River Shannon towards Askeaton. From Askeaton, you can follow the R523 road to Ballymurragh East. It is advisable to plan for this journey as it may take approximately 5 to 6 hours on foot. Ensure to wear comfortable shoes and bring water.
