Muckross House: A Window to the Past

The Sunken Garden, Rock Garden, and Stream Garden were developed in the early 20th century.Muckross Traditional Farms, located within the estate, offer an authentic portrayal of rural life in Kerry during the 1930s and 1940s. Visitors can witness traditional farming practices, explore recreated buildings, and interact with farm animals. Skilled craftworkers demonstrate traditional crafts like weaving, pottery, and bookbinding.The Herbert family faced financial difficulties, leading to the sale of the estate in 1899 to Lord Ardilaun of the Guinness family. In 1910, it was purchased by William Bowers Bourn, who gifted it to his daughter Maud as a wedding present. In 1932, the Bourn Vincent family donated Muckross House and its estate to the Irish nation, establishing it as the first National Park in the Republic of Ireland.
