Cross the road and turn right onto Limerick Road. Walk along Limerick Road for approximately 1.5 kilometers. Clare Abbey will be on your left-hand side, just after passing the roundabout. There is no admission fee.

Founded around 1189, possibly by Donal 'the Great' O'Brien, King of Thomond, it was originally named the 'Abbey of St. Peter & Paul at Kilmony'. The abbey quickly rose to prominence as the largest and most influential Augustinian monastery in the region.Throughout its history, Clare Abbey witnessed both prosperity and conflict. In 1278, it was the site of a bloody ambush during a civil war between factions of the O'Brien family. Despite these turbulent times, the abbey continued to be an important religious center, with evidence suggesting the monks enjoyed a rich diet and imported goods from France and Bristol.Today, visitors can explore the extensive ruins, including the church with its belfry tower, and the remains of domestic buildings arranged around a cloister garth. Architectural highlights include the 15th-century traceried windows, with the east window featuring a carving of a human face. The tranquil setting along the River Fergus adds to the abbey's allure, making it a worthwhile stop for those interested in history, architecture, and the beauty of the Irish countryside.
