Doonagore Castle, whose name likely comes from the Irish “Dún na Gabhair” (fort of the rounded hills or fort of the goats), is a captivating sight on Ireland's west coast. Located a short distance from Doolin, County Clare, this 16th-century tower house has a rich and turbulent history.Built in the mid-16th century, possibly on the site of an earlier 14th-century ringfort, the castle is constructed primarily from sandstone, unlike most regional castles built of limestone. It has passed through the hands of powerful Gaelic clans like the O'Briens and O'Connors. In 1588, a ship from the Spanish Armada wrecked near Doolin, and the High Sheriff of Clare captured and hanged over 100 survivors at Doonagore, adding a dark chapter to its story.Over the centuries, Doonagore fell into disrepair but was restored in the 19th and 20th centuries. Today, the Gorman family owns the castle and uses it as a private holiday home. While the interior is inaccessible, visitors can admire the well-preserved exterior, including the round tower and defensive walls. The castle also serves as a navigational aid for boats approaching Doolin Pier.
