Minard Castle, located near Kilmurry in County Kerry, is a striking ruin that evokes a sense of history and romance. Constructed in the mid-16th century by the Fitzgerald family, also known as the Knight of Kerry, the castle strategically defended the southern coastline as part of their network of strongholds.The castle's history is intertwined with the Irish Confederate Wars of the 1640s. In 1650, it was besieged by Cromwellian forces, who eventually damaged the structure with explosives, leading to its abandonment. Today, the weathered remains of the tower house stand as a testament to its resilience against time and conflict. Visitors can explore the three surviving stories, imagining the original four-story layout and the lives of those who once inhabited it.Beyond the castle itself, the surrounding area offers natural beauty and geological interest. Minard Beach, a storm beach with large sandstone boulders, lies adjacent to the castle. These boulders are believed to have been used for Ogham stones, adding another layer of historical significance to the site. A short walk from the castle leads to Tobar Eoin Baiste (St. John's Well), a site of pilgrimage with a history of local traditions. Minard Castle also had a brief appearance in the 1970 film 'Ryan's Daughter'.
