Getting There

• Car

  If you're traveling by car, start from the city of Potenza, the capital of Basilicata. Head southeast on the SS658 road, following the signs for Salerno. After approximately 36 km, take the exit toward SS92 and continue on this road for about 15 km. Follow the signs for Castelmezzano. Once you arrive in the village, parking is available near the center, but be prepared for narrow roads and limited spaces.

• Public Transportation

  To reach Castelmezzano by public transportation, first take a train from Potenza Centrale to the nearest larger station, either Salerno or Naples. From Salerno, you can catch a local bus heading towards Castelmezzano, but you may need to transfer at the town of Paterno. Check the local bus schedules (SITA bus service) for the latest routes and times. The bus journey might take about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on connections. Make sure to have some cash for the bus fare, which typically costs around €2-€5.

• Combination of Car and Hiking

  For the adventurous traveler, consider driving to the nearby town of Pietrapertosa, which is about 10 km from Castelmezzano. From Pietrapertosa, you can hike the scenic route known as the 'Sentiero del Viandante' that leads to Castelmezzano. The trail offers stunning views and takes about 2 hours to walk. Ensure you wear comfortable shoes and carry water, as this route can be challenging in parts.
