Getting There

Walking

From the Porta Marina entrance, follow the main path towards the Forum. The Basilica is located on the southwest corner of the Forum, a short walk from the Temple of Apollo. The walk is approximately 5-10 minutes, and the ground is uneven. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes.
Public Transport

From the Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri train station (Circumvesuviana line), exit the station and walk straight ahead. Follow the signs for Porta Marina, one of the main entrances to the Pompeii archaeological site. Once inside, the Basilica is a short walk to the Forum. Train tickets from Naples to Pompei Scavi cost approximately €3-5.
Bus

The Eredi D'Apice bus and the Lilliputian “Pompeii City Train” both stop near the Piazza Esedra entrance to the Pompeii ruins. From there, walk to the Porta Marina entrance and follow the signs to the Forum and Basilica. A bus ticket costs around €2-5 , while the Lilliputian train costs €8 for adults and €5 for children (5-10 years) and seniors (75+).

Located in the southwestern corner of the Forum, the Basilica was the most important building within the forum. Inspired by Greek stoas, it functioned as a site for court hearings, business discussions, legal matters, and official public functions. The building had five entrances from the Forum, marked by tuff pillars. Uniquely, its main entrance was on one of the short sides, unlike typical basilicas.Inside, the Basilica was divided into three sections by 28 large brick columns, forming naves. The walls were adorned with stucco resembling marble blocks, and equestrian statues added to its grandeur. Despite the devastating eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., the Basilica's remaining architecture is still impressive.Rediscovered in 1599 and excavated in the 18th century, only fragments of the original structure remain. Though the columns are now stumps and most outer walls are missing, the arcade fronting the tribunal's lower level remains intact. Today, visitors can explore these ruins, imagining the bustling activity that once filled this vital public space.
