    From Piazza Vecchia, walk northeast along Via Colleoni, then turn right onto Via Mario Lupo. The Antico Lavatoio will be on your left, a short distance from the turn. The walk is approximately 5 minutes. There are no costs involved.

  • Public Transport

    From the Bergamo train station, take bus line 1 to the Città Alta funicular station. Ride the funicular to the top. From the funicular station in Città Alta, walk southwest along Via Porta Dipinta, turn left onto Via Bartolomeo Colleoni, then turn right onto Via Mario Lupo. The Antico Lavatoio will be on your left. The bus ticket costs €1.70. The funicular ticket is included in the bus ticket.

  • Taxi

    From the Bergamo train station, a taxi to Antico Lavatoio will take approximately 15 minutes, depending on traffic. Taxi stands are located outside the train station. The estimated cost is €15-€20.

A long, white marble basin is divided into sections, originally intended to accommodate multiple users simultaneously. An elegant cast-iron cover and sheet metal plates complete the structure. The washhouse also featured a water adduction system, an overflow drain, and a gutter to efficiently manage water during the washing process.In the late 19th century, Bergamo faced challenges with water quality and sanitation, leading to health concerns such as cholera and typhus. The construction of public washhouses like the Antico Lavatoio was part of the city's effort to improve hygiene and provide access to cleaner water sources.The Antico Lavatoio remained in use until the mid-20th century when the advent of washing machines in private homes gradually rendered public washhouses obsolete.
