    Discover more about Campanone

Rising from the heart of Bergamo's Città Alta (Upper City), the Campanone, also known as the Civic Tower (Torre Civica), is more than just a landmark; it's a living testament to the city's rich history and enduring spirit. Constructed in the mid-12th century by the Suardi-Colleoni family, it initially served as a house-tower, a combined residence and defensive structure emblematic of medieval Italy. Over the centuries, the Campanone has transformed, mirroring Bergamo's own evolution. In the 13th century, it transitioned to public ownership, becoming a symbol of civic power. The tower's role expanded to include housing prison cells at its base, highlighting its significance in the city's governance. A significant addition came between the late 13th and early 14th centuries when the tower was equipped with municipal bells, solidifying its place as the city's primary bell tower. The largest of these bells, cast in 1656, is the Campanone itself, the largest historical bell in Lombardy. Visitors can ascend the 52.76-meter tower either by climbing the 230 steps or taking a lift. From the top, a breathtaking panorama unfolds, showcasing the beauty of Upper and Lower Bergamo, the surrounding plains, and the Orobie Prealps. The tower also features a mechanical clock, added in the 14th-15th century, marking the passage of time for the city. A unique tradition continues to this day: every evening at 10 pm, the Campanone rings its bell 100 times. This evocative ritual commemorates the curfew during the Venetian rule when the city gates were closed.
