Discover more about Palazzo e Giardini Moroni

Palazzo e Giardini Moroni, nestled in the heart of Bergamo's Città Alta, stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Moroni family and the splendor of Baroque artistry. Construction of the Palazzo began in 1636 by Francesco Moroni, following his marriage to Lucrezia Roncalli, and lasted nearly 30 years. The palace, with its three floors and mezzanines, is located on Via Porta Dipinta. Behind its somewhat austere exterior lies a world of artistic and architectural wonder. The monumental staircase leads to the main floor, where halls and salons are adorned with frescoes and furnishings dating from the 17th to the 19th centuries. The palace's rooms showcase the Moroni family's art collection, featuring works by Lombard artists such as G.B. Moroni, Bernardino Luini, and Cesare Tallone. The Hall of Mirrors boasts frescoes by Giovan Battista Barbelli, while the portraits of Gian Gerolamo Grumelli (The Knight in Pink) and Isotta Brembati, painted by Giovanni Battista Moroni, are among the collection's highlights. The terraced Italian gardens, divided into three levels, offer a serene escape. The formal garden features boxwood hedges and a central fountain, while the historic orchard cultivates old varieties of apple and pear trees. The 'Count's Retreat,' a neo-medieval turret built in the 19th century, provides panoramic views of Bergamo. Beyond the formal gardens lies a 2.5-hectare kitchen garden, a productive plot that once supplied the palace with fresh produce. Since 2019, the Palazzo and Giardini Moroni have been managed by the Fondazione di Palazzo Moroni in conjunction with the FAI – Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano, ensuring the preservation and enhancement of this cultural treasure. Visitors can explore the palace's art-filled rooms, wander through the enchanting gardens, and immerse themselves in the history and beauty of this remarkable Bergamascan landmark.
