Walking

From Piazza Vittorio Veneto, walk along the Sentierone towards Via Torquato Tasso. You'll see shops and colonnades to your left and the Teatro Donizetti to your right. The walk is mostly flat and takes about 5-10 minutes.
Public Transport

From Bergamo train station, take bus number 1 towards 'Città Alta'. Get off at 'Piazza della Libertà'. From there, walk down Via XX Settembre. Continue straight until you reach the intersection with Viale Vittorio Emanuele II. Turn left on Viale Vittorio Emanuele II and continue walking for about 10 minutes. Sentierone will be on your left. A single ticket costs €1.70 and is valid for 75 minutes.

Il Sentierone, meaning "broad path," is one of Bergamo's most famous avenues, located in the lower city (Città Bassa). Constructed in 1620, it initially connected the church of San Bartolomeo to the convent of Santa Lucia. Over time, it transformed from a simple path across the Sant'Alessandro meadow into a paved and tree-lined avenue.For centuries, the Sant'Alessandro meadow hosted the Fiera di Sant'Alessandro, a renowned fair that attracted merchants and travelers from all over Italy and Europe. In the early 17th century, Venetian administrator Niccolò Gussoni enhanced the avenue by paving it and erecting the Colonne di Prato, which still mark the boundary between the Sentierone and Via XX Settembre.During the 20th century, the Sentierone was modernized under the Fascist regime, led by architect Marcello Piacentini. This included the construction of the Quadriportico, a monumental portico overlooking the avenue, which houses Piazza Dante Alighieri. Today, the Sentierone is a popular destination for shopping and leisurely walks, hosting events like the Booksellers Fair and the feast of Sant'Alessandro. Landmarks such as the Gaetano Donizetti Theater and the Church of Santi Bartolomeo e Stefano enhance its appeal.
