The Birthplace of Amedeo Modigliani, located at Via Roma 38 in Livorno, is a journey into the world of one of the 20th century's most celebrated artists. Born in this three-story, 19th-century building, Amedeo Modigliani spent his early years in what was then the heart of Livorno's Jewish quarter. Livorno, a port city, had a long history as a refuge for those persecuted for their religion, fostering a vibrant Jewish community. The museum is housed on the first floor, accessible via a checkered marble entryway and stone staircases. The rooms have been carefully restored to reflect the ambiance of a typical bourgeois residence in Livorno during the late 19th century, with original tiled floors and period furniture. The exhibition, curated by the Guastalla family, features photographs, documents, and reproductions of Modigliani's most famous works. Visitors can explore portraits of family members, childhood photos, school reports, and documents that shed light on Modigliani's artistic journey from Livorno to Paris. The museum also highlights the role of Modigliani's mother, Eugenia Garsin, who ran a private school within their home. The building itself is a modest yet historical residence that retains the essence of post-unification Italy.
