Fortezza Vecchia: Livorno's Ancient Guardian

The Fortezza Vecchia, a red-brick fortress in Livorno, Italy, is steeped in history, with its origins tracing back to the 11th century. Countess Matilda of Tuscany erected a keep that would later be incorporated into the structure. In 1377, the city of Pisa built a fort called the Quadrature of the Pisans, which also became part of the fortress. The Medici family significantly expanded the fortress starting in 1519, with the design attributed to Antonio da Sangallo the Elder, a renowned military architect. Michelangelo may have also contributed to the fortress's design. The fortress is characterized by its asymmetrical structure and three bastions: Ampolletta facing the city, Canaviglia facing the port, and Capitana facing northeast.
