The Castello di Levanto, dominating the landscape of Levanto, is a striking medieval fortress with a rich history. Built in the 12th century by the Malaspina family, the castle served as a crucial part of Levanto's defense system, protecting the town from pirates and maritime invasions. The castle was extensively renovated in the 16th century and later used as the headquarters of the Captaincy of Levanto and even as a prison under Genoese rule.Architecturally, the Castello di Levanto features a square base structure and an imposing circular tower. While the castle is now a private residence and not accessible for interior tours, its exterior is well-maintained and offers a glimpse into its storied past. The castle walls showcase decorative motifs, including those reminiscent of the conflict between the Guelphs and Ghibellines, and two bas-reliefs depicting the Annunciation and Saint George defeating the Dragon.Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Levanto, the Ligurian Sea, and the surrounding hills from the castle grounds. The area around the castle is perfect for leisurely walks, with trails leading through the countryside and connecting to the Cinque Terre National Park.
