Discover more about Devil's Bridge

The Devil's Bridge, officially named Ponte della Maddalena, is a captivating medieval bridge located in Borgo a Mozzano, in the province of Lucca. This architectural marvel crosses the Serchio River and is renowned for its distinctive asymmetrical arches, with one large arch flanked by three smaller ones. Its unique shape has inspired artists and given rise to numerous legends, the most famous of which tells of a builder who made a pact with the devil to complete the bridge on time. Constructed in the 11th century under Countess Matilda of Canossa, the bridge served as a vital river crossing on the Via Francigena, a medieval pilgrimage route to Rome. It was later renovated in the 14th century by Castruccio Castracani. The bridge's current appearance is the result of various modifications, including those made after a severe flood in 1836 and the addition of an arch in the early 20th century to accommodate a railway. The bridge's unusual shape and gravity-defying structure led to the popular legend of its construction involving the Devil. According to the tale, the builder, overwhelmed by the task, sought help from the Devil, who agreed to complete the bridge overnight in exchange for the soul of the first to cross it. Outsmarting the Devil, the builder sent an animal, either a dog or a pig, across the bridge. Enraged, the Devil disappeared, leaving the bridge as a testament to the legend. Today, the Devil's Bridge is a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors with its rich history, stunning architecture, and the enchanting legends that surround it. The bridge is open to the public at all times and offers picturesque views of the Serchio Valley.
