Discover more about Piazza Medicea

Piazza Medicea, also known as Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, has been the heart of Fivizzano for centuries. This vibrant square, once the town's marketplace, serves as a focal point where local routes converge with those leading from the ancient walled city's three gates. The square's origins trace back to the 14th century when the Malaspina family established Fivizzano as their residence. However, it was under Medici rule in the 15th century that Fivizzano truly flourished, becoming a vital hub for trade between Tuscany and Northern Italy. The square is surrounded by historical buildings, including the Prepositural Church of Saints Jacopo and Antonio. The elegant palaces that line the square – Molari, Cojari, Gargiolli and Battini-Rossi – reflect the town's rich history. Although many were rebuilt after the devastating 1920 earthquake, which lowered their height by one story, they still evoke a sense of the square's former grandeur. Palazzo Cojari is the only building that retains its original appearance. The centerpiece of Piazza Medicea is the stunning Medicean Fountain. Constructed between 1648 and 1683, the fountain was commissioned by Cosimo III de' Medici and features a mix of marble and local stone. The sandstone basin, crafted by Jacopo Toschini, is adorned with marble shells and dolphins. The fountain stands as a lasting symbol of Medici influence and Fivizzano's importance during that era. Today, Piazza Medicea remains the social and commercial center of Fivizzano, hosting markets and events throughout the year.
