Forte delle Saline: A Coastal Fortress
Explore Forte delle Saline, a historic coastal fortress in Tuscany with stunning views and a rich military past dating back to the 15th century.
Forte delle Saline, also known as Torre delle Saline, is a captivating fortress situated near Orbetello in Tuscany, Italy. Located at the mouth of the Albegna River, this historical site was initially built in the second half of the 15th century by the Sienese. The tower was constructed in 1469 by Giovanni Danesi da Como. In 1630, under Philip IV of Spain, it was expanded with a fort, bastions, and a moat with a drawbridge, becoming part of the defensive system for the State of Presidi. The fortress features a quadrilateral structure with a prominent tower facing the sea. Its architecture includes a thick curtain wall with a parapet walkway for artillery. The complex has a sturdy tower, a small bastion, and circular sentry boxes at each corner. The base has sloping walls reinforced with a stone belt-course. Strategically positioned, Forte delle Saline controlled the nearby salt pans, river port, Via Aurelia traffic, and passages on the Tombolo della Giannella. In 1645, a Franco-Piedmontese expedition landed here, aiming to challenge Spanish control, but the Spanish garrison retreated without a fight. Today, the complex is privately owned and serves as a private residence. Although the interior is not accessible to the public, the exterior remains a striking example of military architecture and a reminder of the region's storied past.
