Discover more about MAGMA Museum of Arts Cast Iron Maremma

MAGMA, the Museum of Arts Cast Iron Maremma, resides within the restored Forno San Ferdinando, Follonica's oldest building and a key part of the former ILVA industrial complex. The museum tells the story of the city's iron and steel industry. Founded to preserve the legacy of Follonica's ironworks after the Ilva plant's closure in 1960, MAGMA opened in 2013 after a complete renovation of the original Museum of Iron and Cast Iron. The museum's exhibits are spread across three floors, each exploring a different facet of iron production. The first floor focuses on art, showcasing wooden models used in the casting process and highlighting the artistic achievements of the Follonica foundries. The second floor delves into the history of iron production in the region, examining the resources, energy, and technologies that sustained the industry. The lower-ground floor, at the heart of the San Ferdinando furnace, demonstrates the complex processes involved in smelting and casting iron. MAGMA also serves as a gateway to the Park of the Metalliferous Hills in Grosseto, highlighting the region's broader industrial heritage. Interactive displays, multimedia installations, and workshops offer visitors an engaging experience, revealing the ingenuity, artistry, and passion that defined Follonica's ironworking tradition.
