Cala Violina: Tuscany's 'Violin Beach'

Discover Cala Violina, a Maremma gem: crystal waters, 'singing sand,' and protected natural beauty in Tuscany's Scarlino reserve.

4.6

Cala Violina, a jewel on the Tuscan coast, resides within the Bandite di Scarlino Nature Reserve, halfway between Follonica and Punta Ala. This beach is celebrated for its unique characteristic: the sand, composed of small quartz grains, emits a distinctive sound resembling a violin's melody when stepped upon. This phenomenon, known as a 'sound beach,' is rare, with only about 100 similar locations worldwide. The beach itself is a picturesque cove enclosed by two promontories, offering an unspoiled view of the sea. The turquoise waters are exceptionally clear, ideal for snorkeling, and the surrounding Mediterranean vegetation adds to the area's natural beauty. The beach is accessible via a scenic walk through the Bandite di Scarlino Natural Reserve, enhancing the sense of seclusion and tranquility. To preserve this natural heritage, access to Cala Violina is limited to 700 people per day between June 1st and September 30th. Reservations are required, ensuring a less crowded and more enjoyable experience. While there are no formal bathing facilities, a kiosk offering refreshments and sandwiches operates during the summer. Picnic tables are available in the shade of the pine forest.
