Discover more about Santa Severa Castle

Santa Severa Castle, located in the municipality of Santa Marinella, approximately 50 kilometers north of Rome, stands as a testament to the region's rich and layered history. The castle's origins trace back to the ancient Etruscan port of Pyrgi (7th/6th century BC), connected to the ancient city of Caere (Cerveteri). The area has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, with the castle itself dating back to the 14th century, though a fortress dedicated to Santa Severa existed on the site as early as the 10th-11th centuries. The castle's name honors the young Christian martyr Severa, who, according to tradition, was killed on the beach in 298 AD. A church was later built in her honor, and her remains are said to be within the castle's foundations. Over the centuries, the castle has been owned by various noble Roman families and even served as a resting place for popes in the 16th and 17th centuries. The castle complex includes the Rocca (the main fortress), a medieval village, and the Church of Santa Maria Assunta and Santa Severa. The Rocca still displays its military past, with visible machicolation and slit holes from a former drawbridge. Today, Santa Severa Castle is a cultural hub, hosting museums such as the Museum of the Sea and Ancient Navigation, the Antiquarium of Pyrgi, and the Local History Museum. Visitors can explore exhibits on underwater archaeology, ancient navigation, and the history of the surrounding territory. The castle also hosts cultural events and even offers hostel accommodations. Recent restoration work has revealed significant archaeological discoveries, including polygonal walls from the 3rd century BC and sections of 13th-century walls. The castle's unique setting between the beach and the sea provides a captivating backdrop for exploring its history and enjoying the beautiful Lazio coastline.
