Discover more about Path of the Seven Stones

The Path of the Seven Stones (Percorso delle Sette Pietre) offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural narrative in the heart of the Lucanian Dolomites. This ancient peasant path, approximately 2 kilometers long, links the picturesque villages of Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa, winding through a dramatic landscape of towering rock formations and lush greenery. The trail draws inspiration from local legends and the story "Vito danced with witches" by Mimmo Sammartino. As hikers traverse the path, they encounter seven stone sculptures, each representing a key theme or chapter in the story: Destiny, Enchantment, Spell, Witches, Flight, Dance, and Delirium. These stones serve as both trail markers and storytellers, enhancing the immersive experience. The path itself varies in elevation, ranging from 920 meters in Pietrapertosa, down to 660 meters in the Caperrino river valley, and back up to 770 meters in Castelmezzano. While the hike is generally considered easy to moderate, some sections may be challenging due to steep ascents. Along the way, hikers can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding valley and mountains. Castelmezzano, known as one of Italy's most beautiful villages, features charming streets, traditional architecture, and local eateries. Pietrapertosa, the highest village in Basilicata, offers the ancient Saracen quarter of Rabatana and the ruins of Castello Saraceno.
