    Discover more about Bergamo Cathedral

Bergamo Cathedral, or Duomo di Bergamo, stands as a testament to the city's layered history and artistic achievements. Dedicated to Saint Alexander, Bergamo's patron saint, the cathedral is located in the heart of Città Alta, close to the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. The site has been a place of worship since at least the 5th century, with archaeological evidence confirming the presence of a paleo-Christian church. The cathedral's history is complex. Initially, Bergamo had two cathedrals: one dedicated to Saint Alexander and another to Saint Vincent. In 1561, the cathedral of Sant'Alessandro was demolished, leaving the church of San Vincenzo as the sole cathedral, which was then dedicated to Saint Alexander. The current building's construction began in the 12th century and continued for many years, incorporating Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance influences. The neo-classical west front was completed in 1889. Inside, the cathedral is adorned with artistic treasures. Visitors can admire paintings by Andrea Previtali, Giovan Battista Moroni, and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. The main altar holds an urn containing the remains of Saint Alexander. One of the cathedral's most significant relics is the tiara of Pope John XXIII, crafted from gold and adorned with diamonds, pearls, and precious stones. The Cathedral Museum showcases the architectural evolution and historical treasures of the cathedral. Recent excavations have revealed the stratigraphy of the area and remains of Roman roads.
