Discover more about Villa Pliniana

Nestled on the southeastern shore of Lake Como in the charming village of Torno, Villa Pliniana is a historic villa dating back to 1573. The villa is named after Pliny the Elder and Pliny the Younger, naturalists from Como who first described the intermittent spring around which the villa is built. This unique spring, also studied by Leonardo da Vinci, flows through the villa before emptying into the lake. The villa was originally commissioned by Count Giovanni Anguissola, the governor of Como, who sought to transform the spring and surrounding land into a place of beauty. Over the centuries, Villa Pliniana has been owned by various prominent families, each leaving their mark on its architecture and gardens. The Canarisi family, who owned the villa in the 17th century, are credited with bringing it to its greatest splendor, restoring the St. Francesco Chapel and redecorating the main halls. In the 19th century, Prince Emilio Barbiano di Belgiojoso d'Este used the villa as a retreat. Throughout its history, Villa Pliniana has hosted monarchs, scientists, musicians, and writers, including Napoleon, Alessandro Volta, Franz Liszt, and Giacomo Puccini. Today, after careful restoration, Villa Pliniana blends its historical charm with modern luxury, offering suites, independent villas, a spa, and meticulously manicured gardens. The villa is a popular venue for weddings and events, offering a picturesque setting with its lake views and classical architecture.
