Discover more about Terrazza del Duomo

The Terrazza del Duomo, or Duomo Terraces, offers a breathtaking and unique perspective of Milan. Conceived during the early stages of the cathedral's construction, the terraces provide visitors with an opportunity to walk among the Duomo's architectural details while enjoying panoramic city views. Located approximately 31 meters above ground level, the first level of walkways runs along the perimeter of the monument. From there, steep staircases lead to the second level, about 45 meters high, bringing you to the central terrace. This expansive 1530 square meter area provides stunning views of Milan and, on clear days, the mountains surrounding the Po Valley. The terraces feature 135 intricately adorned spires, most standing around 17 meters tall. The largest spire, constructed between 1765 and 1770 under architect Francesco Croce, is topped with a gilded copper statue of the Virgin Mary, known as the Madonnina, which has watched over the city since 1774. Walking across the Terrazza del Duomo is like traversing a stone forest filled with decorative elements sculpted from Candoglia marble. Over 3,400 statues, 150 gargoyles, and numerous other sculptures adorn the terraces. The Terrazza del Duomo is open daily, offering a chance to witness the sunset over Milan from a truly remarkable vantage point.
