Basilica of San Domenico: A Masterpiece of Art and History

The Basilica of San Domenico is one of Bologna's most important churches, holding immense religious and artistic significance. The basilica was constructed in the 13th century by the Dominican Order to house the remains of their founder, Saint Dominic. He was fascinated by Bologna's rich culture and the importance of its university. The basilica has evolved over the centuries, blending Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque architectural styles. The basilica is home to the Ark of Saint Dominic, a monumental marble tomb containing the saint's relics. Designed by Nicola Pisano and enriched by contributions from Niccolò dell'Arca, Michelangelo, Alfonso Lombardi, and Jean-Baptiste Boudard, the ark is a masterpiece of medieval and Renaissance sculpture. Michelangelo, as a young artist, sculpted three statues for the ark.
