Discover more about Bologna Municipal Theater

The Teatro Comunale di Bologna, located at Largo Respighi, 1, stands as a testament to Bologna's rich musical heritage. The theater was designed by Antonio Galli Bibiena after a fire destroyed the Teatro Malvezzi in 1745. The Teatro Comunale was built on the site of the former Palazzo Bentivoglio, which was destroyed in 1507. The theater officially opened on May 14, 1763, with the debut performance of Gluck's opera, 'Il Trionfo di Clelia'. Throughout its history, the Teatro Comunale has been a stage for significant musical events, including the first Italian performance of Wagner's 'Lohengrin'. Many renowned musicians have performed here, including Mozart and Rossini. The theater has undergone several renovations, including work on the dressing rooms, stage, and facade. Today, the Teatro Comunale continues to operate as a prominent venue for opera and ballet. While the historic venue is under restoration until October 2026, performances are held at the modern Comunale Nouveau in Piazza della Costituzione. The theater houses a historical archive and library.
