Discover more about Parco Regionale dell'Abbazia di Monteveglio

The Parco Regionale dell'Abbazia di Monteveglio, established in 1995, encompasses approximately 900 hectares of hilly terrain near Monteveglio in the Samoggia Valley, between Bologna and Modena. This park is the smallest in the region and is characterized by a blend of natural beauty and historical significance. The park's landscape features vineyards, orchards, and steep slopes, alongside the remains of the Castello di Monteveglio and the Abbazia di Santa Maria di Monteveglio with its ancient parish church. The area's unique geological formations include badlands, creating a diverse environment that supports a variety of flora and fauna. Visitors can explore well-marked trails, discover ancient rural settlements, and enjoy panoramic views. Historically, the area was a frontier between Bologna and Modena and was known as 'mons belli' due to the wars and battles that took place there. The Castello di Monteveglio reached its peak under Matilda of Tuscany but was later ruined by fire in the late 15th century. Today, the park is also home to the Consorzio Vini Colli Bolognesi, which protects the local wine production, including the native Pignoletto grape.
