Cascate di Carpinone: A Molise Natural Wonder

Cascate di Carpinone, or the Carpinone Waterfalls, have become a renowned natural attraction within the Molise region, near Isernia. The waterfalls are easily accessible from the ancient village of Carpinone, known for its medieval architecture and the Caldora Castle. Carpinone itself, perched on a mountain, offers a glimpse into the past with its historic center and surrounding natural beauty. The waterfalls are formed by the Carpino River, which originates from Monte Totila. The main falls, also called Cascate del Carpino, feature a dramatic 20-meter drop. A second waterfall, the Cascata Schioppo, offers a more secluded and intimate experience. The Cascate di Carpinone (Carpino Falls) are created where the Carpino and Tura rivers meet. One of the two main falls is partially artificial, channeling water to a hydroelectric plant downstream. Visitors can explore the falls via well-maintained trails that start from the village center. These paths wind through lush woods, filled with diverse flora, enhancing the picturesque scenery. The trails are marked with handcrafted wooden signs, showing a commitment to preserving the natural environment. The waterfall area is managed by local volunteers, who are dedicated to enhancing and rediscovering the region’s natural heritage.
