Discover more about A Rejecelle (Vicolo Stretto)

A Rejecelle, affectionately called by the locals, is Termoli's most slender alley, tucked away in the heart of the ancient village. Stepping into this narrow lane is like stepping back in time, offering a tangible connection to the town's rich history. At its narrowest, A Rejecelle measures a mere 34 centimeters (about 13 inches) wide. The alley is 7.88 meters long. The name 'A Rejecelle' is derived from the French word 'rue' (street), which was adopted and modified by the locals in 1799 during a period of French influence. Historically, it is believed that the alley was constructed as a means for residents to move around during emergencies like wars, invasions and famines. The pathway allowed people to avoid main roads. The existing stone pavement is made of white Apricena stone, but it was originally made of pebbles. Legend has it that when two gentlemen met in the alley, the lesser noble would step aside. If they were of equal status, they might even duel to decide who had the right of way. Today, visitors enjoy squeezing through the alley, testing whether they can fit.
