Discover more about Jewish Community of Casale Monferrato

The Synagogue of Casale Monferrato, located in the Jewish quarter (formerly the ghetto) at Vicolo Salomone Olper 44, is a remarkable site. The first confirmed presence of Jewish people in Monferrato dates back to 1438. The synagogue itself was erected in 1595 and is known for its exquisite Baroque interior. From the outside, the synagogue has a plain facade, typical of ghetto synagogues that were intentionally discreet. This was because, until 1848, synagogues were not allowed to be visible from the outside. Inside, however, visitors are greeted by a breathtaking display of Piedmontese Baroque and Mannerist artistry. The walls and ceilings are embellished with elaborate paintings, intricate carvings, and generous gilding. The rectangular prayer room features a large domical groin vault, illuminated by high rows of windows. Two levels of women's galleries (matroneums) run along the sides, concealed by gilded wooden grates. The Ark, which houses the Torah scrolls, is situated along the Western wall and is decorated with stuccowork depicting Jerusalem. Over the centuries, the synagogue has undergone several renovations and expansions. In 1787, the Ark was embellished with precious woods and gold leaf. In 1866, the entrance was moved, and Venetian mosaic floors were added. The synagogue suffered vandalism during World War II and was later restored in 1968. Today, it is recognized as a National Monument of Italy and stands as one of the best examples of Piedmontese Baroque architecture. The Jewish Museum, connected to the synagogue, houses a collection of Jewish ceremonial artifacts, including silver objects, embroideries, and antique Torah scrolls.
