Discover more about Paleologi Castle

Nestled in Piazza Castello, the Paleologi Castle in Casale Monferrato is a striking example of medieval military architecture. Originally built in the 14th century by Giovanni II Paleologo, the castle was erected to bolster existing fortifications. The Paleologi family, with ties to the Byzantine Emperors, ruled the Marquisate of Monferrato from the 13th to 16th centuries, adding to the castle's prestige. Over the centuries, the castle underwent several transformations. During the Visconti period, it was equipped with firearms. In the 15th century, Guglielmo VIII Paleologo and Bonifacio V expanded and modified the structure. After 1559, when Casale Monferrato fell under the rule of the Gonzaga of Mantua, the castle was converted into a fortress. The Gonzaga family enhanced the defenses, adding ramparts, towers, and ravelins. Until the mid-19th century, the castle retained the structure established by the Gonzaga family. The castle has an asymmetrical hexagonal layout with circular corner towers and is surrounded by a deep, dry moat. The main gate features a marble bas-relief depicting the heraldic symbols of the lords of Monferrato: Aleramo, Paleologi, and Gonzaga. Notable features include the patrol paths and the underground chambers in the western wing, which were rebuilt in the 18th century. Today, the Paleologi Castle is a cultural center that hosts exhibitions and events. Visitors can explore its ancient walls, enjoy panoramic views, and delve into the region's rich history.
