Parco Naturale delle Capanne di Marcarolo: A Piedmontese Wilderness

The Parco Naturale delle Capanne di Marcarolo, established in 1979, is a sprawling protected area in the Piedmont region of Italy, bordering Liguria. Situated just kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea, this park encompasses over 9,500 hectares of mountainous terrain, offering a unique blend of wilderness and wildlife. The park's landscape is characterized by diverse geological formations, including the Marcarolo plateau, and boasts a rich hydrographic network with lakes and streams. The park is home to several mountains, including Monte Figne, the highest summit, as well as Monte Tobbio and Monte Taccone. These peaks offer breathtaking views, with the Ligurian Sea visible on clear days. Historically, the area has served as a transit point between the Ligurian coast and the Padan Plain. The park contains historical monuments such as the Shrine of Benedicta, commemorating a WWII massacre, and the ruins of an old abbey near Capanne di Marcarolo. Visitors can also explore the Ecomuseum of Cascina Moglioni, housed in a traditional building, to experience the daily life of local farmers from the past. The park's diverse environment fosters a wide array of flora and fauna. Mediterranean and alpine plant species coexist, and the park is home to various animal species, including eight species of snakes and the Italian cave salamander. The park is also a nesting ground for various bird species, including the short-toed eagle, which has become a symbol of the protected area. The Parco Naturale delle Capanne di Marcarolo offers numerous hiking trails and opportunities for outdoor activities such as mountain biking, horseback riding, and snowshoeing.
