Discover more about Porta Sole

Porta Sole, also known as the Arch of the Lilies, stands as one of Perugia's oldest and most significant city gates. Its name, meaning "Gate of the Sun," reflects its position on the highest point of the city, catching the first rays of dawn. While the current structure dates back to the medieval era, the location has held strategic importance since Etruscan times. Originally, Porta Sole was part of the Etruscan city walls, later incorporated into a 14th-century fortress commissioned by Abbot of Monmaggiore to secure papal control. This fortress was largely destroyed following a popular revolt in 1375, though remnants of its arches can still be seen. Over the centuries, the gate has undergone several transformations, with the addition of the Lilium Crest by Pope Paul III, leading to its alternate name, Arco dei Gigli. Today, Porta Sole serves as a remarkable observation deck, providing visitors with unparalleled views of Perugia's rooftops, historic architecture, and the rolling Umbrian hills. It's a place to appreciate the city's rich history and enjoy a tranquil escape from the bustling streets below. The site is particularly enchanting during sunrise and sunset, when the landscape is bathed in golden light.
