    Discover more about Anfiteatro Campano

The Anfiteatro Campano, located in Santa Maria Capua Vetere, is a magnificent reminder of ancient Rome's influence in the Campania region. Second in size only to the Colosseum, it is believed to have been a model for the famous arena in Rome. Constructed around the 1st century AD, and later embellished by emperors Hadrian and Antoninus Pius, the amphitheater could hold up to 60,000 spectators, who gathered to witness gladiatorial combats and public spectacles. This historical site is renowned as the location of the first and most famous gladiator school, where Spartacus, the Thracian gladiator, led a revolt in 73 BC. This rebellion saw over 70 gladiators escape and challenge the Roman army, significantly impacting Roman politics. Exploring the well-conserved corridors beneath the arena, visitors can almost hear the echoes of the past, imagining gladiators preparing for battle and the roar of the crowds. Over the centuries, the amphitheater faced numerous challenges, including being used as a quarry for construction materials. Despite this, substantial parts of the structure remain, offering a glimpse into its original splendor. Today, the site includes a garden displaying fragments of the amphitheater's original decorations and a gladiatorial museum with armor and a model reconstruction of the arena. The Anfiteatro Campano, along with ancient Capua, has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
