    Discover more about Piazza Mercato

Piazza Mercato, or Market Square, is a vibrant and historically significant piazza in Naples, Italy. For centuries, it has served as a focal point for Neapolitan life, acting as a bustling marketplace and a stage for dramatic historical events. Originally an irregular clearing outside the city walls, the Angevins transformed it into a major commercial center. Over time, it also became a site for public executions, including that of Conradin of Swabia in 1268 and revolutionaries in 1799. The square is also known as the place where the revolt of Masaniello broke out in 1647. Masaniello, who lived nearby, led a popular uprising against the Spanish viceroy government. Today, Piazza Mercato is characterized by its irregular shape and the presence of four significant churches: the Church of Sant'Eligio Maggiore, the Church of the Carmine, the Church of the Cross at the Purgatory, and the Church of St. John. The square continues to be a lively meeting place where locals and tourists can experience the essence of Neapolitan culture, with vendors, street performers, and the aromas of local cuisine filling the air. While the square suffered damage during World War II and a period of decline in the 20th century, it is now experiencing a revival, blending its rich history with contemporary life.
