Procida, the smallest inhabited island in the Bay of Naples, is a hidden gem brimming with colorful houses, crystal-clear waters, and a rich tapestry of history and culture. Often overlooked in favor of its more famous neighbors, Capri and Ischia, Procida offers an authentic Italian experience with its unspoiled charm and picturesque landscapes. Procida's history dates back to ancient times, with evidence of Mycenaean Greek presence as early as the 16th to 15th centuries BC. The island was later colonized by Greeks and became a resort for Roman elites. Over the centuries, Procida has transformed from a fortified medieval village to a thriving fishing community. The island's strategic location in the Bay of Naples has made it a target for invasions and raids, leading to the construction of fortified structures like Terra Murata. Today, Procida is celebrated for its unique blend of historical charm and modernity. The island's colorful architecture, with houses painted in vibrant pastel shades, creates a cheerful and lively atmosphere. Marina Corricella, the oldest fishing village on the island, is a postcard-perfect spot with its colorful houses cascading down the hillside to the harbor. Terra Murata, the highest point on the island, offers panoramic views and is home to historical landmarks such as the Palazzo d'Avalos and the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo. Procida's beaches, including Spiaggia Chiaia, Pozzo Vecchio, and Chiaiolella, offer opportunities for relaxation and sunbathing in a tranquil setting. A boat tour around the island reveals hidden coves, stunning landscapes, and the chance to see Procida from a different perspective. The island's culinary scene is also a highlight, with fresh seafood and local specialties to savor. As Italy's Capital of Culture in 2022, Procida has gained recognition for its commitment to preserving its cultural heritage and promoting sustainable tourism. The island's motto, "la cultura non isola," reflects its vision of culture as a bridge connecting people and places.
